superheroes

superheroesYesterday, one of the Chinese students we were hanging out with asked me a wonderful question. It is a question I was unable (or unwilling) to answer. It was a question that you, my fellow Americans, perhaps can help me with. The million dollar question was... "Why do Americans have so many superheroes?" He said he asked his friend from France (there are a lot of French exchange students here) if they had superheroes. The French student couldn't think of one. He said that China had none until recent times, and still very few. So why do we have so many superheroes? He started naming all the ones he could think of: Spiderman, Batman & Robin, the Invisible Man, Wonderwoman, Superman, The Incredible Hulk, Captain America. The list went on & on... My gut reaction was to say that we have so many superheroes because we are lacking so many real-life heroes. But I thought that might be a lil' too heavy of an answer. So, I simply laughed, and told him I did not know. And, honestly, I had never thought of it before.

What do you think? Why do we have such a vast pantheon of superheroes?
