we have wheels!!!

more picswe're so legit now!
the foreign affairs people gave us a (very used) bike! we've been admiring how couples ride bikes here: the boy drives and the girl sits on the back rack. we rode around the campus a few times practicing this method of transport. my ass hurts. we haven't ventured past the campus perimeter yet, but we're hoping we'll have the nerve tomorrow. learning our balance is ONE thing... learning how NOT to get run over by the billions of other bicycles, pedestrians, buses and taxis (which defy all laws of physics by mysteriously sharing the same space at the same time) is a totally different story! wish us luck!

insurance? here? ha! no such thing! accidents are handled out of pocket at the scene of the crime. we've seen a couple of incidents already and you can spot one a mile away... there's always a thick crowd of curious people standing around to investigate. and the rules are simple: regardless of which direction you're going, always stay on the TOP side of the road.

you can drive on the UNDER side of the road there?!

you know, if you "dig to china"... then, when you are in china... where do you dig to?

my gramma's dog, Tippy, compulsively scratches the floor before he lays down, and my family has always joked about how he's trying to dig his way to China! I know why... cuz THIS is exactly where he's from! every dog here looks like Tippy!

so, I guess if you were to dig a hole through the earth, you would eventually wind up in my gramma's living room!
